Tri-Fold Brochure Sizes & Printing: A Practical India Guide

Tri-fold brochure sizes, A4 and DL panel logic, C-fold vs Z-fold, paper that won't crack, 2026 prices and a pre-flight checklist for India printers.

Tri-Fold Brochure Sizes & Printing: A Practical India Guide

The tri-fold brochure is the workhorse of Indian print marketing, sitting somewhere between a leaflet and a full booklet, and it is the piece most small businesses order first after their visiting cards. Get the tri-fold brochure sizes right and your 6-panel brochure folds flat, stands in a document wallet and reads in the right order; get them wrong and the panels collide, text disappears into the creases and the shop rejects the file at prepress. This practical India guide covers the standard sizes, the panel logic, the folding options, the paper that survives the fold without cracking, and what tri-fold printing costs in 2026.

Standard Tri-Fold Brochure Sizes in India

Two sizes dominate the Indian market. The A4 tri-fold starts as a full A4 sheet, 210 mm by 297 mm, and folds into three roughly equal sections, ending at about 210 by 99 mm. The DL tri-fold starts already slim at 99 mm by 210 mm and folds to about 99 by 70 mm, which sits neatly in a standard envelope and is a favourite for event invites and direct mail. When printing both sides you get six panels, three on each face, and that six-panel canvas is the real canvas of the format.

One detail trips up most first-time designers: the panels are not exactly equal. Because the folded sections nest inside each other, the panel that folds in first is slightly narrower, by 1.5 to 2.5 mm, to let the outer panels close flush. If you size all three panels identically, the last panel mushrooms out beyond the edge and the brochure refuses to lie flat. Indian print shops handle this in their imposition, but you should know why your client job sits slightly off those even measurements.

C-Fold vs Z-Fold: Pick the Right Folding Style

The common letter fold is the C-fold, where the two outer flaps fold towards each other over the middle panel. It is the default tri-fold, cheap, robust, and correct for nearly every business brochure. The Z-fold (also called the accordion fold) uses three equal panels that fold in opposite directions, so the brochure unfolds like a concertina and can stand on its own as a counter tent. The gate fold, with two narrow panels folding inwards to leave a wide centre, is a premium variant used for product launches and luxury menus.

Choose the fold based on how the piece will be used. If it will be handed out and read in the hand, a C-fold is safest. If it will stand on a reception desk or sit behind a product in a retail display, the Z-fold's self-standing geometry earns its slightly higher bindery cost.

How to Design a Six-Panel Tri-Fold Without Error

Design the six panels in the order they will be read, which is almost never the order they appear in the file. On the printed sheet, panel one is the front cover, panels two and three flow inside, and the back panel carries the contact block, with the corresponding inner three panels on the reverse. Map your reader's eye from front cover, to inside spread, to back coverage, and only then look at the flat file.

Keep a safe margin of at least 5 mm around all copy, apply 3 mm bleed so panels trim cleanly, and above all, never place text or a headline that crosses a fold line, because the fold eats between 1 and 2 mm of the panel and will either swallow the copy or split it. Ask the printer whether they will score or crease the fold on heavier stocks; a scored fold on 200 GSM and above prevents the coated surface from cracking and is worth the small per-piece charge.

Paper to Choose for a Tri-Fold Brochure

For a brochure that will be handled repeatedly, 170 to 250 GSM art card silk is the zone to live in. At 170 GSM the tri-fold folds cleanly, survives a wallet and a bag, and prints a rich double-sided colour. Moving to 200 or 250 GSM adds a weight and stiffness that reads expensive and lets the brochure stand on its own, but with those weights you should explicitly request a scored fold. At 130 GSM the piece starts to feel like a leaflet that happens to be folded, acceptable for high-volume mailers and market handouts, but not for a client-facing brand piece.

Silk and matte art finishes reduce finger marks dramatically on the front panel, which in Indian monsoon humidity and exhibition foot traffic is the difference between a brochure that looks fresh at the end of the day and one that looks handled. If you add a matt lamination for extra durability, budget roughly Rs 0.5 to 1.5 per piece on top of the paper price.

Tri-Fold Brochure Printing Prices in 2026

Indicative DL tri-fold prices on 170 GSM art card, CMYK double-sided with a scored fold, run before GST at 18 percent, as follows.

  • 100 copies: about Rs 18 to 28 per piece
  • 250 copies: about Rs 12 to 18 per piece
  • 500 copies: about Rs 9 to 13 per piece
  • 1,000 copies: about Rs 6.5 to 10 per piece
  • 5,000 copies: about Rs 3.5 to 6 per piece

An A4 tri-fold moves a little above the DL at the same quantity because it carries more sheet area and twice the panel count worth of ink coverage. GST at 18 percent, again the CGST plus SGST combination for intra-state sales in Delhi, applies on top, and offset delivery runs about 5 to 10 working days in metros such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, while digital runs in 2 to 4 working days below about 500 copies.

A Pre-Flight Checklist Before You Send the File

Give your printer a file that will pass prepress in one round, because every rejected file costs you a day of turnaround. Use a print-ready PDF/X, embed every font and convert text to outlines where the shop asks, place images at 300 dpi in CMYK, and set the document to the exact flat size with 3 mm bleed and your panels positioned in the correct reading order. State the fold type on the file, not just in the email, so the bindery operator has no ambiguity.

If you are ordering under time pressure because an exhibition is approaching, confirm the printed proof on the same stock and with the same fold before the press run starts, because a tri-fold folder is one of the easiest documents to miscommunicate and one of the most expensive to reprint.
